Construction is moving along at Kings Island, the Six Flags-owned theme park outside of Cincinnati, Ohio, as crews work to prepare the site for two new water attractions: a new water coaster and kids slide area. The property’s waterpark, Soak City, will be welcoming guests starting May 24 to ride the state’s first dual-racing water coaster and experience the transformation of an existing children’s pool thanks to engineering by Martin Aquatic.

Standing nearly 50 feet tall, the water coaster manufactured by WhiteWater is designed as a dual racing coaster with side-by-side lanes that allow two-person rafts to race to the finish. Called RiverRacers, it starts by launching riders down a stomach-lurching drop before being propelled up a sharp hill. The coaster then diverges on separate slide paths through closed and open tunnels before the final splashdown to see which raft wins.

“After working with Kings Island on the design through last year, it’s exciting to see the construction cranes lifting steel that will soon support a unique attraction for the state of Ohio,” said Josh Martin, president & creative director of Martin Aquatic. “The combination of a thrilling water coaster and pint-sized kids slides all provided by WhiteWater will make Soak City the MUST-DO summer activity for families in the Cincinnati area.”

For children and families, the new pool and slide area took over an existing family zone and repurposed it into a functional new amenity. Renamed Splash River Junction, the poolscape features a large wading pool with a new central water feature themed to look like an old-fashioned water tower. Adjacent to the pool are six kids slides that all end in a runout, giving parents the peace of mind that even their littlest sliders will be safe in the water.

Behind the scenes, Martin Aquatic also helped Kings Island renovate the mechanical equipment powering these new and existing amenities. Retrofitting the plumbing and filtration with the best water quality management systems will allow optimal operation and the cleanest water for years to come.

Following winter’s major frost from earlier this month, construction has started picking back up with crews pouring the foundations for the ride supports of RiverRacers. The construction crew anticipates that installation of ride steel will begin soon, along with the steel stair tower.
