Martin Aquatic Awarded Patent for its Blue Mar Basins® Technology as it Unveils its New Testing Facility, the Martin Aquatic Test Bay
The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent to Martin Aquatic’s Blue Mar Basins system, which serves as the centerpiece of the company’s newly-built R&D lab for aquatic engineering innovation.

World-class aquatic design and engineering firm, Martin Aquatic, announced its Blue Mar Basins® technology was issued a U.S. Patent at the same time as unveiling its new testing facility for water feature innovations, the Martin Aquatic Test Bay, in Orlando, Florida. The facility will allow the company’s engineering team to simulate real-world conditions while testing ideas such as the now patented Blue Mar Basins system for treating multi-acre swimming amenities.
“After working through the basis of design for Blue Mar Basins over several years, we are incredibly excited about receiving a patent from the USPTO,” said Josh Martin, president and creative director of Martin Aquatic.
Filed in May 2022, the application “Systems and Methods for Automated Sampling, Testing and Treating Large Water Basins” was issued as patent #12,441,628 and protects innovations included in the Blue Mar Basins technology itself. This patent, and the underlying technology, are the latest recognitions of years of research and innovation driven by the Martin Aquatic engineering team. The biggest installation of this technology debuted in July with the opening of Carnival Cruise Line’s private destination, Celebration Key, and its two 3.5-acre basins.
Inside of the Martin Aquatic Test Bay, the team behind Blue Mar Basins has built a 24 foot by 24 foot test pool using Myrtha’s Stainless Steel panel construction. The water treatment system uses the company’s equipment, called Blue Mar Products™, which also comprises its automated control systems for monitoring and treating the water chemistry. The team installed another new Martin Aquatic innovation within the pool, the Blue Mar Nova light, to illuminate the water and showcase the light’s brightness and color range.
In addition to pool engineering technologies, the facility will also support the water feature division of Martin Aquatic, allowing the designers to test various fountain nozzles and spraying jets for different aesthetic conditions.
“We’ve helped clients select the right spraying effect for different choreographed fountain shows using simulated animations, but when you watch it in person, it’s that much easier to reconcile what they’re seeing with their original vision,” said Diego Cordova, technical director at Martin Aquatic.
Only five miles away from Martin Aquatic’s downtown Orlando office location, the Test Bay is available for client visits, offering the chance to see a working installation of the Blue Mar Basins system on a small scale, as well as test water feature mock ups.
