This past weekend, Martin Aquatic treated its employees and their guests to a team retreat unlike any other—the whole company boarded a cruise to Royal Caribbean’s private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, where Martin Aquatic designed all of the pools, water slides, and water features. The timing of the trip also allowed the team to experience Royal Caribbean’s newest addition to CocoCay, Hideaway Beach, the adults-only area with a new 18,000-square-foot infinity-edge main pool.

“While the primary goal of the cruise was to have fun as a team and reward our staff with a great vacation, we also fit in an educational component too,” said Josh Martin, president & creative director of Martin Aquatic. “Thanks to CocoCay’s onsite team, our whole team was able to tour the back of house spaces and see our designs in action. For some of them, they had never seen a mechanical room in person before.”

Seeing the immaculately-kept mechanical space was a testament to the professionalism of Royal Caribbean’s island staff, who meticulously clean and maintain the equipment in the harsh Bahamian climate where the number one enemy is sand. But it also demonstrated the ingenuity of Martin Aquatic’s designers who create complex piping assemblies to account for site conditions. It was a big learning experience to see that the pumps for CocoCay’s new Hideaway Beach pool had to be placed in a 20-foot-deep well to match the low elevation of the pool’s infinity-edge catch basin.

After the island’s short “field-trip” tour, the Martin Aquatic team experienced everything else CocoCay had to offer—and everything the company designed back in 2017. Almost the whole team tested their courage inside Thrill Waterpark on the tallest waterslide in North America, Daredevil’s Peak. Even more adventurous employees and their guests continued on to more slides, while most explored the island’s beautiful pools or watched kids enjoying the wet play structure at Splashaway Bay.

Back onboard the ship, our team shared the fun of ziplining, rock climbing, surfing on the FlowRider, singing karaoke, and more. The Martin Aquatic staff is now over 40 team members, and our total group size of 63 people meant that we always saw a friendly face around the ship!

This cruise came at a time when Martin Aquatic is experiencing the company’s greatest growth spurt. Several new employees joined in just the last few months, allowing the trip to serve as a wonderful team retreat to get to know everyone better. And, with major projects in the pipeline, Martin Aquatic is continuing to hire. There are currently four new job postings for positions including: Project Manager; CFD Engineer; Manufacturing Engineer; and, Production Designer.
